Thermal Imaging

  • Identify potential equipment/component failure or irregularities in loading
  • Prevent fire/explosion
  • Check component integrity
  • Determine loading condition of equipment
The visual inspection of each switchboard will help determine its condition: ie broken door hinges, excessive heat, build up of dust/dirt, vermin proof, unsafe condition or discoloration of components, condition of legend, clear local access area, etc.

Maintenance personnel can plan repairs as necessary.

What is Thermal Imaging

Thermal imaging, is a technology that uses infrared cameras to detect and measure the heat emitted by objects. This heat is translated into an image, called a thermogram, which displays different temperatures with various colors. The technology behind thermal imaging involves capturing the infrared radiation emitted by all objects above absolute zero temperature, and converting these data points into an image that can be interpreted visually. This process allows for non-contact temperature measurements, which is a significant advantage in hazardous situations.

How we use Thermal Imaging?

We use thermal imaging cameras to identify overheating components in electrical panels, transformers, and other equipment. This can indicate potential failures, allowing for preventive maintenance or replacement before a malfunction occurs.

Loose electrical connections can cause excessive heat buildup. A thermal camera can quickly pinpoint these issues, which might be missed during a routine visual inspection. This helps in preventing electrical fires and ensuring system reliability.

Thermal imagers help electricians verify that circuits are evenly loaded. Imbalances can be visually identified when certain circuits appear hotter than others, suggesting an uneven distribution of electrical load which can lead to inefficiencies and increased wear on electrical components.

Thermal imaging is useful for checking the effectiveness of insulation in electrical systems. Poor insulation can lead to energy loss and potential hazards; thermal cameras can reveal these faults without the need for disruptive inspections.

For complex electrical issues, thermal imaging can help electricians quickly diagnose problems by providing a clear picture of thermal anomalies. This speeds up the troubleshooting process, as it guides the electrician directly to the point of concern.

During maintenance or inspection rounds, thermal imaging can be used to monitor the condition of electrical systems over time. This ongoing documentation can help track the progression of potential issues and verify that repairs have been successful.

By enabling electricians to see beyond the visible spectrum and detect issues related to heat, thermal imaging cameras serve as a critical diagnostic tool, reducing downtime, enhancing safety, and improving the reliability of electrical systems.
